All around the world, International Women’s Day celebrates the economic, political, and social achievements of women while calling for greater equality.
This celebration was established in 1911. On the 8th of March Italian men celebrate the day with a gift of yellow mimosas to their women.
Natalia Costa-Zalessow, Professor Emerita in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures at San Francisco State University, with the participation of Joan E. Borrelli, translator of Margherita Costa’s Poems into English, will present:
THREE OUTSTANDING ITALIAN WOMEN OF THE BAROQUE PERIOD:
THE COMPOSER FRANCESCA CACCINI
THE PAINTER ARTEMISIA GENTILESCHI
THE POET MARGHERITA COSTA
The lecture will include: a short music selection from Caccini’s “La liberazione di Ruggiero dall’isola di Alcina”, (the first opera composed by a woman), images of some of Gentileschi’s paintings, and passages from Margherita Costa’s poems.
